Reaching the Elite: Inside the Meehan Tennis Academy Performance Pathway

As we move into October, the Australian summer of tennis is just around the corner. For players with big ambitions, this is the time of year when preparation meets opportunity. At Meehan Tennis Academy, we don’t just offer lessons; we provide a professional environment designed exclusively for players desiring to reach the elite level of the sport.
Our Performance Program is a comprehensive journey. We guide players as they move through Tennis Victoria’s Super 10s and the Australian Junior Tour, into International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior events, and finally toward the American College System or a professional career on the ITF/ATP/WTA tours.
A 4-Tier System for Long-Term Success
To support players at every stage of their development, we have developed a specialised four-tier training system. Each level is carefully calibrated to the player’s age, skill, and Universal Tennis Rating (UTR):
- Fast Track Orange (Typical Age 6–8): The foundation of our performance pathway, focusing on motor skill development and squad play using orange balls.
- Performance Experience (Typical Age 8–10 | UTR 1.0–3.0): Introducing Green balls and formalised Strength & Conditioning to build the physical base required for competitive play.
- Performance Establish (Typical Age 10–12 | UTR 3.0–5.0): Transitioning to Yellow balls, where tactical clarity and technical consistency become the primary focus.
- Performance Immerse (Typical Age 12–15 | UTR 5.0–8.0): The elite junior tier, preparing players for high-level Yellow ball tournaments and international pathways.
The Meehan Performance Pillars
What makes our program a professional environment? It comes down to our commitment to the whole player and the expertise of our coaching staff.
- Elite Leadership: The program is developed and overseen by our Director of High Performance, Ryan Meehan. Ryan is a Tennis Australia High Performance Qualified Coach, an ATP Certified International Coach (GPTCA), and was a 2024 Tennis Coaches Australia Club Coach of the Year Finalist. He is supported by a team of highly experienced coaches who have worked with international-level talent.
- Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD): Every player is provided with a personalised LTAD plan. This roadmap outlines Technical, Tactical, Physical, and Physiological goals, giving the player, parent, and coach a clear direction for development.
- Integrated Private Coaching: Progress requires individual attention. All performance players have a minimum of one private or semi-private lesson per week. This is a mandatory requirement to ensure the specific skills worked on in squads are fully understood and mastered.
- Scientific Strength & Conditioning (S&C): Access to elite-level fitness training is a staple of our program. Led by Dr. Sukhjivan Singh (PhD in Physical Education & Level 3 Performance Athletics Coach), players undergo regular fitness testing to track progress and identify areas for physical improvement.
- Tournament Support: We don’t just train you for the court; we support you on it. Our program includes tournament scheduling and on-site support from our coaches at selected tournaments throughout the year.
Step Into a Professional Environment This October
The pathway from a junior player to a professional athlete is a marathon, not a sprint. It requires a structured process, expert guidance, and a relentless focus on improvement.
